ABOUT KSI:
In February, Hawaii added another legendary event to its rich surfing
history by providing the venue for the Kelly Slater Invitational. The
event, organized to benefit Reef Check, stoked the crowd by pairing an
eclectic group of musician and film personalities with a crew of today's
top wave masters. The world's hottest surfers paddled into the line-up,
sharing waves with big-name entertainers in a series of competitive
events. Everyone was amped by the carefree vibe of the competition and
the inspired purpose of the event.
The legendary skater, Tony Hawk, and east coast groove-maker,
G. Love, traded turns in the blue barrels with the likes of wave
aerialist Bruce Irons and iconic "soul surfer" Rob Machado. The
competitors charged Hawaii's notorious waves showcasing a radical
display of talent and occasional carnage as the entertainment world
tried to hang with the surfing elite. Contests range from the hilarious
absurdity of synchronized surfing, and K-O-O-K (a surfing version of
H-O-R-S-E), to the mind-blowing big air display of tow-in surfing, and
various point scored heats.
ABOUT KELLY SLATER:
Rising to surfing infamy from the unlikely beach breaks of Cocoa
Beach FL, Kelly Slater has exploded from east coast grommet to an
unprecedented seven-time ASP world champion. Slater's effortless style
in the water is a unique combination of elegant grace and unbridled
aggression. Since first joining the pro-ranks at age twenty, Slater has
been able to balance repeated victories in worldwide competitions with
the true soul and freedom of surfing as a life-affirming passion. With
seven ASP World Titles, global surfing adventures, and an ocean of media
attention, Kelly Slater has evolved from a World Champion Surfer to a
cultural icon of his generation.
